YOGA with SURI

The Avalon School of Yoga teaches all aspects (or 'limbs') of yoga to beginners, intermediate and advanced students, and trainee teachers. We offer both individual and group classes, as well as retreats or workshops that embrace all levels,

Our yoga asanas and pranayama methods are based loosely upon the teachings of B K S Iyengar and others, as well as our study of the origins, philosophy and history of yoga. The basis of our method is that correct posture and alignment are as crucial as correct breathing to achieving the desired result. We modify these physical practices according to the needs of our students. In particular, we uses blocks, belts, bolsters and other equipment to help students ease into any desired position, as well as making adjustments to achieve the correct alignment or position.

Mental and attitudinal changes usually accompany a student's practice of the asanas and pranayama, which changes are generally known as yamas and niyamas. As a result, the student experiences a deeper self-awareness, and becomes calmer and generally more compassionate.

Once a student has mastered these physical practices, we introduce them into the remaining, 'higher' stages of yoga, guiding them through each one as needed.
